This Homemade Halal Fried Udon Recipe A La 'WOK HEY' Is The Ultimate Comfort Food

I have been a huge fan of Chinese cuisines and Chinese takeaway food; even more so over the past few years, where more and more local eateries started applying for their halal certification. There is just something really intriguing about watching the noodles being scooped and tossed on a huge fire in front of your eyes, don’t you think? Cheap thrills.

But really. I really love stir-fried udon with lots of chicken, onion, and sometimes the occasional add-on of mushrooms. Most importantly, the condiments that are thrown into the wok. I think that’s what sets their Chinese styled zhi char food aside from the Malay fried noodles or rice. The condiments. I was craving for these stir-fried noodles during the circuit breaker but all of the shops were closed.... and that’s when I decided to try whipping up my own version.

If you are not a fan of spicy food, like me, then this recipe might be great for you!

Ingredients for Fried Udon recipe:

  • 1 pack (300g) fresh udon
  • 1 tbsp of blended garlic
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup of diced chicken meat
  • 1 cup of fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 large egg
  • 6-8 slices of fish cakes or shrimp (optional, if you want double meat)
  • 1/2 cups shredded cabbage (optional)


  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sweet soy sauce (kicap manis)
  • 2 teaspoons spicy soy sauce (kicap manis pedas)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar

Fried Udon recipe Cooking Instructions:

1. Boil the friedudon for about 2-3 minutes and set it aside.

2. Heat up the pan with olive oil and fry the garlic until it smells like heaven.

3. Toss in the chicken until it’s cooked, and then add in the mushrooms and boiled udon.

4. Gradually add in the sauce ingredients and lastly, the egg.

5. Keep stirring until everything is well coated and the egg is cooked!

6. Serve it up on a pretty plate (or a Chinese takeaway box if you’d like)

If you don’t have all the ingredients listed above, not to worry! This recipe is easily customisable so you can really switch things up, depending on your preference or depending on what you have in your fridge. I did try whipping it up a day before we went grocery shopping (where the fridge is almost empty) but it still tasted good enough for my husband to devour it within minutes.
