This New Halal Izakaya In KL Serves Staple Izakaya Dishes With A Malaysian Twist

Face it, we’re all suckers for Japanese food! Looking at the endless pop-ups of halal Japanese food all over town, we simply can’t get enough of this umamilicious cuisine. ? Here’s one more new halal Japanese food stall to satiate your (understandably) fervent cravings: Kingu Kongu, Kuala Lumpur’s very own halal izakaya! ?

Halal Izakaya In KL Kingu Kongu Serves Izakaya-Style Food

The stall was born out of the pandemic in June last year, and aims to serve izakaya-style dishes such as yakitori (meat skewers), other grilled meats and seafoods, sashimi, and other small portions of food. For the uninitiated, izakayas are a small Japanese drinking establishment with food served tapas-style. They are usually casual eateries with small wooden tables and chairs and a place where Japanese would hang out after work.

Here in Kingu Kongu, no alcohol is served here and it is also Muslim-owned, so you can immerse yourself in the izakaya vibes with halal Japanese food! ? The name ‘Kingu Kongu’ is Japanese for ‘King Kong’, and the design of this quaint, cosy stall replicates the true markings of an izakaya: contemporary Japanese designs and wooden furnishings, with a splash of colourful vintage Japanese pop culture posters. Okay, time to dig in! ?

While Kingu Kongu serves everything from BBQ skewers to makimono (sushi) to donburi (rice bowls), we picked some of the dishes that have been all the rage among die-hard Japanese food lovers! ?

First up, it's the the Beef Tataki. Beef tataki is made using the Japanese method of preparing fillet beef, where the meat is lightly seared, marinated, and sliced thinly. It’s laid nicely over a bed of cooked mushrooms and an assortment of vegetables. Pair it up with their homemade soy sauce, and a whole lot of flavours swirl around! This is the umami we all love! ?

Next up, another fan favourite is the Black AngusBeef Teriyaki. Another melt-in-the-mouth situation here, because if meat doesn’t do that, is it really meat though? ?

The Japanese knows their seafood well, and you’ll be missing out if you leave without trying their Salmon Truffle Bomb. It’s a cold dish, with salmon sashimi sitting on top of mashed potatoes, and yes, its flavours are as crazily good as it’s being described. The word ‘bomb’ says it all, doesn’t it? ?

Some of their dishes also have a sprinkle of Malaysian influences all over. One of which is the Salmon Sambal Petai Maki. The maki is topped with stink beans, salmon and their homemade sambal. It might sound a little bit confusing at first, but we promise the ingredients complement well with each other for a tasty sweet-savoury combination. ?
